Drop anything else here. Seriously, anything. We want this to go smoothly, so if you need an answer, we want to give you one.

PostSubject: Painting scoring   General questions EmptyMon Jul 16, 2012 8:22 am

So, painting is being scored "equal" to the points as the other things, but what does that really mean?

For instance (just making up numbers so I can illustrate my question)

Let's assume that :

battle points = 90, and appearance = 90, and sportsmanship =90
Win = 30, tie = 15, loss = 0

They "completed their games" but lost one, and tied one. Some will lose more, some will win more, but if swiss style pairings are used, then this is roughly how it should work out.

Now, let's compare that to appearance. If it's *truely* being ranked equally with battle points, then the majority of people will get 45 points, meaning that they came with a fully painted table-top ready army.

Otherwise, if the majority of painting points is given for showing up with a fully painted army, then it changes from "painting is being scored equally" to "You must have a fully painted army to win, but winning your games is more important than your painting score".

Neither approach is right or wrong, but I think that if you set the expectations early you'll have fewer complaints. Of course nothing you'll do will eliminate the complaints entirely, but every litte bit helps. Wink

The Eleventh Company Podcast does a couple episodes on this exact point. For a swiss system, I would listen to those, they have some excellent point. However, Tacticon does not have enough rounds for perfect swiss, thus it doesn't really apply. Several players can get 60 battle points, and several players can get 60 painting points, and sports....
Now, about the needing a well painted army to win best overall, you better believe it. It's not, who is the best general who paints a little better or is a little nicer, you have to play nice, have a good looking army, and win. If it were easy, why bother?

Yep, it's fun listening to them struggle through all the issues I've already faced. When will the rubics be posted? Probably more importantly, when will we know the 3rd scenario, and will the scenarios be used in the defined order?
