| Warmachine is a table top game where the player takes control of a Warcaster and his or her elite unit of warriors and machinations of war.
Each Warcaster has certain strengths and works best with particular Jacks(large machines of war) and/or infantry.
Warcasters can utilize a resource called focus to cast spells increase the damage of attacks, their accuracy, and even the strength and accuracy of their jacks.
Unlike many other table top games as soon as the Warcaster is felled on the battle field the game is over, however, this is more often than not easier said than done.
Unlike Warhammer FB/40K Warmachine armies are typically much smaller and only use 12-35 models in a tournament list.
Each army has a prticular strength and each of their warcasters will capitalize on a particular part of that strength.
Cryx is an undead army that uses the souls of it's fallen enemies to fuel their dark powers and machines, the Cryx are surprisingly fast and they use a combination of debuffs and sacrificial units to bring down their enemies.
Cygnar is the most technologically advanced society and they specialize in combined arms which is a fusion of powerful ranged attacks and melee.
Khador relies on their lumbering behemoths of steel and steam, their jacks are solid walls of armor that can shrug off all but the most lethal of blows and their infantry aren't much less intimidating, because of all their armor Khador tends to be slow compared to most other armies.
The protectorate of Menoth are holy zealots who seek to convert or purify all those who do not worship Menoth. Menoth is an army completely based around unit synergy and comboing buffs on their units as well as offering solutions to shut down enemy spell casting.
The retribution of Scyrah is an Elven army bent on the destruction of all other races because they believe the use of arkane magics are casing the death of their god. The Scyrah are a very elite army each unit is pretty well designed to stand alone however they function like a scalpel in the hands of a brilliant surgeon.
Mercenaries are exactly what they sound like, they are Dogs of war that are willing to do any job for almost any employer just so long as the money is good. Mercenaries bring a large assortment of infantry and jacks ranging from pirates to Ogre elites. Mercenaries don't particularly specialize in anything each list is tailored to their Warcaster.

| Depends entirely on what your playstyle is.
If you like big, beatstick 'Jacks go with Khador
If you like shooting and tricks, go with Cygnar
If you like combos and resource denial and fire! -Menoth
How about stealth? Cryx or Retribution
lots of options available, and the cool thing about Warmachine is that every Warcaster makes your army play completely differently. Also worth noting is that unlike 40K or Warhammer, every faction of WM/Hordes id pretty fairly balanced, so there isn't really a "best" army. Go with what you like the look and fluff of, to be honest. I think that philosophy will serve you best. Plus, WM is pretty cheap to get into, so if you get done or halfway done with your list and change your mind, it isn't terribly crippling financially.

| Start with the starter sets of the faction you like best if you can. Mercs and Ret dont have a starter set but i could point you in the right direction of good models to start with for ether of those armys if you like. A good thing to note is that this game can be fun at the starter box level. I feel it really shines once you get to 35 or 50 pts, but can be alot of fun at smaller points and it will givew you a feel for the game. If you are intrested in a demo of the basic system i will be more then happy to bring my armies in and run a few games with you. Just say when and ill set it up. = ) | |
